Do you adopt out of State?2021-04-18T00:59:07+00:00

SSGDR is a foster-based rescue. We have fosters in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. We will only adopt to these states. Since we require an in-person home visit as part of our adoption process, adopters must be in one of these states where we have a network of volunteers available to do these checks. Exceptions may be made for previous SSGDR adopters.

What are your requirements for a foster home?2021-04-20T22:28:04+00:00

Our foster homes go through the same 3 step application process as our adopters (phone interview, vet check, in-person home check). Please take the time to review our adoption requirements prior to submitting an application. We look to our foster homes to provide the initial love, care and training to prepare their foster dane for their forever home. We prefer our foster homes to be in the states of AL, TN or GA as we have rescue friendly veterinarian in all three states. This also allows us to keep close tabs on our foster dogs and more easily provide transports if necessary.

Does SSGDR provide dog food to foster homes?2019-01-27T16:51:44+00:00

Most of our foster homes provide dog food for their fosters. This is a tax deductible donation. If you are unable to provide dog food for your foster, SSGDR will have food shipped or provide funds to purchase.

What vet services is the foster home responsible for?2021-04-20T22:25:24+00:00

SSGDR takes care of all vetting and preventatives. We pay the vets directly or refund based on receipts. However, fosters must take their danes to a rescue approved vet. All vet visits must be approved by a rescue board member prior to the visit.

Are adopters required to have a fenced yard?2021-04-20T22:14:13+00:00

No, not always. Each adopter/foster situation is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, except for electric or other types of invisible fencing which is not permitted. There are some dogs that are flight risks or need leash training for which a fence will be required.

Are all pets in the home required to be altered before adoption and/or fostering?2021-04-20T22:12:09+00:00

YES

All Pets must be spayed or neutered unless there is a valid medical reason that the pet is not altered. Applications may be placed on hold until young pets in the home are spayed or neutered. Fosters will not be allowed to have unaltered pets in the home.

Do you adopt to homes with small children?2019-01-27T16:54:22+00:00

SSGDR requires children in the home to be 8+ years to adopt.

What are your adoption requirements?2021-04-20T20:51:29+00:00
  1. Application fee is a non-refundable donation to the rescue, even if your application is declined or for whatever reason is not able to be processed, your fee will not be returned. These funds will be used toward the rescue dogs currently in our care.
  2. Adopter must understand that owning a Great Dane is expensive and their care can be more costly than a normal dog.
  3. An inexperienced or first time great dane owner MUST have researched the breed and be knowledgeable about their unique needs and common medical conditions. We will not adopt a great dane to anyone that has never owned a dog before. These are not “starter dogs.”
  4. ALL adopted dogs will be indoor, family pets and will not be allowed to live completely outdoors.
  5. ALL other pets (dogs and cats) in the home must be spayed and neutered.
  6. ALL other pets (dogs and cats) in the home must be up to date on vaccines. We will call your veterinarian to check this.
  7. ALL pets in the home must be on heartworm preventative (dogs) and flea prevention (dogs and cats).
  8. No children in the home under 8 years old – *exceptions may be made for very experienced Great Dane owners or previous SSGDR adopters
  9. Adopters must go through a 3 step application process (phone interview, vet check, in-person home check) before they can be approved and each step must be satisfactory for approval.
